CELEBRATING A CLEAN BILL OF HEALTH keith m
We are beyond excited to welcome back to the gym, Rival OG Keith M with a clean bill of health! Last September Keith was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Keith immediately went into treatment and approached his diagnosis with the same strength and positivity that he maintains through all of his life endeavors, including his Rival workouts. Over the last 5+ months Keith has kept us apprised of his progress in beating the cancer and has shared anecdotes that have helped him through this journey. Here’s one inspiring moment we wanted to share with everyone:

A note from Keith:

I had a PET scan a week ago. My first ever. You have to lie very still breathe very shallow. And not move. Which of course is way too freaky lying there thinking wow I’ve got cancer. I almost lost it.

But then I thought what do I do where I’m timed and you have to push through? Rowing. Think of rowing. I started repeating in my head “Legs, core, arms” back (as in return), “Legs, core, arms”. It was amazing. I started seeing the whole rowing room. Jim M you were on my left just like Tuesday mornings. I could see the monitor with my stroke rate. Told myself “hold it at 30, got to go the distance.”

I got so relaxed I actually forgot where I was. I was worried I might be moving too much. But no problem. My heart rate calmed down. When the tech’s voice said “you’ve got 6 mins left” I knew I was in the home stretch.

I chanted Legs Core Arms in my head for 27 minutes, seeing that whole rowing room in my mind while laying completely still.

I made it through that key scan thanks to what I learned from Rival. I truly believe my time at Rival prepared me physically and mentally to better deal with this illness.

Keith – your strength and determination are model for us all. We can’t say enough how happy we are knowing that you are healthy (and back in the saddle)!!
