MEET OUR GROUP FITNESS TEAM

Here at Rival, we’re not big into the “one size fits all” motto. We know that fitness is a little different for everybody. That’s why we keep our class lineup diverse and class sizes small, to allow for personalized instruction. Our Group Fitness Team features some of Seattle’s finest and most experienced fitness professionals. Every class instructor at Rival possesses their own unique blend of expertise, kindness, creativity, and humor – which is what makes Rival the highest-rated group fitness location in Capitol Hill.

Her motto is, “always proud, never satisfied.”

Jim
Rival Fitness

For Rival’s founder and owner Jim Mahan, his training career began as a natural transition from his passion for athletics. A collegiate track athlete, Jim graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Business Administration and began a long tenure in human resources at Nordstrom. It was there that Jim decided he wanted to share his love of fitness with others, and so he achieved his Strength and Conditioning Certification through NSCA. While running his own personal training business, Jim developed FIT Squad, a results-proven group-training program. As the FIT Squad method took off, it was apparent that this was the start of building a fitness community. In 2013, Jim opened Rival Fitness’ doors for the first time and continues to teach classes in addition to personal training.

Madi
Rival Fitness

Madi’s passion for health and wellness stems from a background in gymnastics. She is certified in Personal Training and Group Fitness with a focus in mind-body exercise and has earned a B.S. in Exercise Science. After rehabilitating from numerous injuries herself, Madi is pursuing a career in Physical Therapy that drives her focus on dynamic training for the functional and balanced athlete. Whether it means running a marathon or walking up a set of stairs at home, she never wants to feel confined by the body that she is in and strives to enable her clients in the same way.

Danielle
Rival Fitness

Danielle Bregent holds an interdisciplinary Masters degree from the University of Washington in modern health practices. She has been developing and leading initial and refresher training courses for instructors since 2014. Tammara
Rival Fitness

Tammera’s great passion is to help guide students to find a healthy perception of themselves through exercise. As a former competitive gymnast, Tammera began practicing yoga to help stabilize her joints and prevent injury. She soon fell in love with teaching fitness. Her teaching practice incorporates physical elements of strength and flexibility, as well as mediation and psycho-education. Tammera’s education background includes a 200-hour yoga teaching certification, myofascial release, Above The Barre, NASM-CPT, Indoor Row with Rival, Schwinn cycle, pilaties, and USAG gymnastics. In addition to her fitness certifications, Tammara holds a Bachelor’s Degree in the Science of Psychology from Washington State University, a Master’s degree in Sport Psychology from John F. Kennedy University, and is currently pursuing a Psy.D./M.A. in Counseling Psychology at Northwest University in Kirkland. Katie
Rival Fitness

By day, Katie edits medical journals. By night, she teaches cycle classes, including our Cycle + Core on Mondays and Thursdays. Katie started her fitness instruction journey at 18 as a volunteer yoga teacher with the South Puget Sound Boys & Girls Club. Since then, Katie has become a certified instructor through YogaFit Levels 1 and 2, YogaWorks 200 hr., and Maddog Spinning.

Over the last two years, she’s led classes in Boston and Nantucket, Massachusetts and is excited now to bring her talents to Rival.

Her classes are based around mindful movement to create body-positive spaces with her deeply held belief that all people deserve to feel empowered within their own bodies. Katie has an advanced understanding of the biomechanics involved in cycling and is able to meet each individual where they’re at to help them build a lifelong practice of sustainable activity.

All Rivalers and guests are welcome to join Katie in Cycle + Core and are encouraged to come ready to sweat, work hard, honor their bodies, and not take themselves too seriously.

Logan
Rival Fitness

Logan achieved his personal training certification with NCCPT and has been training for the past four years and coaching HIIT classes for about a year. A lifelong athlete, Logan pursued strength training after his collegiate football career was unfortunately cut short due to injury. In 2016, he was a qualified national competitor in the men’s physique division with National Physique Committee.

When it comes to his class, Logan makes sure first and foremost, that all his exercises are fun and can be altered across different ability levels. He likes to include strength-based, balance, plyometrics, and CORE exercises in every HIIT circuit he designs.

Mike
Rival Fitness

A longtime friend of Rival founder and owner Jim Mahan, Mike immediately became a rowing class regular once Rival opened its doors in 2013. This prompted Jim to encourage Mike to become a rowing instructor himself.

Mike has now been teaching rowing classes for three years and his Sunday morning class remains a member favorite. Proper rowing form rules above all else in Mike’s class, and he enjoys incorporating speed drills and friendly competition.
